Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States, with nearly 20,000 women likely to receive a diagnosis in 2024. With nonspecific symptoms and no proven early-screening tests, ovarian cancer unfortunately often goes undetected until it has reached an advanced stage. In the hopes of changing these statistics, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in September advocates for cancer research, which could lead to better screening, prevention, and treatment of this serious diagnosis.
Knowing risk is an important aspect of awareness, and the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance’s toolkit feature several important facts:
- • 20% of ovarian cancers are caused by a genetic mutation; knowing your genetic risk can be a lifesaver.
- • 70% of the most common ovarian cancers begin in the fallopian tubes.
- • A family history of breast, colorectal, or uterine cancer increases ovarian cancer risk.
- • Oral contraceptives reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
- • Risk of ovarian cancer decreases with every pregnancy but increases with age and menopause.
- • There are racial disparities in ovarian cancer survival rates; Black women have a lower incidence of ovarian cancer than White women, but they have worse outcomes, with 5-year survival rates of 43.2% versus 50.6%, respectively.
The Importance of Women’s Health-focused CME
At the same time, the Council on Graduate Medical Education’s (COGME) Fifth Report on Women and Medicine states that “changes in undergraduate and graduate medical education, in addition to continuing medical education, are needed to address adequately the comprehensive health needs of women. Primary care physicians (PCPs) who completed residency training prior to the establishment of new guidelines for women’s health education are, in fact, dependent on continuing medical education (CME) to update their knowledge and skills.”
At Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, we take this guidance seriously, with women’s health an integral part of our CME curriculum – both at our in-person CME Conferences and via our Online CME options – both Virtual CME and On-demand CME.
In 2024, our remaining in-person CME Conferences have a full day dedicated to women’s health, also available via CME Virtual Conference:
- October 8-11, 2024: San Antonio, TX, Aleece Fosnight, PA-C, CSC-S, CSE, NCMP, IF
- October 21-24, 2024: Orlando, FL, Nancy Berman, MSN, ANP-BC, NCMP, FAANP
- November 12-15, 2024: Las Vegas, NV, Nancy Berman, MSN, ANP-BC, NCMP, FAANP
CME Online
Our On-demand CME includes a women’s health-focused CME package worth up to 12.75 CME credit hours, as does our “Best of” series – worth up to 39 CME credit hours – that packages some of our best presentations from our 2022, 2023, and 2024 in-person CME Conferences.
Lastly, our Master Clinician Series also include several sessions on women’s health. While they are non-CME, these recorded 30-minute webinars are available for FREE and are a great way for anyone looking for some consistent lunchtime learning.
“While not specific to ovarian cancer, there are so many new advances in women’s health that I’m excited to share this year,” Berman said. “For example, cervical cancer prevention with primary HPV testing, as well as widened screening intervals in HPV-negative women. Medical professionals need to understand disparities in women by race in managing vasomotor symptoms. There are non-hormonal FDA-approved products for vasomotor symptoms based on science and understanding the mechanism of vasomotor symptoms in the KNDY Neurons in the hypothalamus. Things are always changing, and I love sharing my knowledge about women’s health through Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts’ CME Conferences.”
