According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there is already a shortage of physicians in the Ob-Gyn field, and it’s expected going forward that the workforce will meet only 90 percent of the demand by 2030. Broken down by region, the Northeast is expected to still have a full Ob-Gyn workforce in 2030, but the Midwest, South, and West are predicted to fall short by 5 percent, 11 percent, and 20 percent, respectively. (It’s expected that overall, however, certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) will exceed the demand for their respective roles by more than 100 percent by 2030.)
Influencing factors include:
- Aging workforce: Almost half of U.S. physicians are over 55 years old, and doctors are more likely to retire at an average retirement age than in decades past.
- Malpractice: Ob-Gyns are the second-most commonly sued type of physician, making the burden of malpractice insurance and the emotional toll of lawsuits a very real influence.
- Abortion restrictions: In 2023, two percent fewer medical students applied to an Ob-Gyn residency than the prior year. For the 13 states with total abortion bans, there was a three percent decrease in residency applications.
With this kind of growing need, the Ob-Gyn sub-specialty should be a focus for anyone passionate about women’s healthcare – and at Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, a leading provider of Ob-Gyn CME, women’s health has been a fundamental part of our in-person CME and online CME since our founding. We know that education and continued support is critical for every sub-specialty – and especially so for a field that needs workforce growth! As a result, we consistently make women’s health a part of our in-person CME Conferences and online CME.
