At Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, we’re dedicated to making Diabetes CME an integral part of our community, fostering awareness and education. The fourth Tuesday of March, known as “American Diabetes Alert Day,” serves as an annual, one-day effort to remind the public about the seriousness of diabetes and encourage everyone to take the diabetes (Type 2) risk test and learn more about the risk factors for type 2 diabetes. It’s a worthy goal: 38.4 million Americans have diabetes, and 8.7 million are unaware they have it. An additional 97.6 million people ages 18 or older have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. More than 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it.
American Diabetes Alert Day also seeks to remind people of the risks of untreated diabetes: Persistent high blood glucose levels can damage the body’s organs and, over the long-term, include damage to both large and small blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack, stroke, and issues with kidneys, eyes, gums, feet and nerves. Diabetes is also the number-one cause of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
