When you earn continuing medical education credits at CME conferences with Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, you do a lot more … you’ll also meet and learn from thought leaders in your field; network with nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PTs), registered nurses (RNs), and physicians from across the country; relax in beautiful, destination locations; and give back to your community. Wait, what? Give back?
Indeed, Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts founded the Turn It Up Foundation, which provides funding to elementary-age children who are deaf and hard of hearing so that they can pursue their musical interests, such as piano lessons, band instruments, and more. To fund it, we donate a percentage of every one of our CME conferences (in-person and online) registration to the foundation and have donated more than $100,000 to date! Then, we offer scholarships for music lessons or other musical pursuits, with awards intended to assist recipients with educational costs, including tuition and fees—award amounts average around $1,500 for the school year. We also partner with the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell), which works to advance listening and spoken language for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

So, why do we this? Turn It Up was inspired by Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts’ Founder Chuck Dillehay’s son, Caleb, who was born deaf.
“I’ve always loved music,” Dillehay explained. “I pursued a degree focusing on the music business in college and eventually worked with the Country Music Association. I still play piano, and my wife, Kim, sings. Caleb showed musical talent, as well, and we wanted to support that. He now plays both percussion and keyboard, and it’s been so inspiring to see him on the front row of the marching band and listen to him play the piano. It’s our wish that others will be inspired by him too, and as a leading provider of CME, it only seemed natural to combine earning CME and giving back this way!”
“Our partnership with AG Bell has also led Kim to serve on their scholarship review team,” he added. “Every year, they review applications for financial aid and for a Leadership Opportunities for Teens (LOFT), a unique program designed specifically for high school students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Our son attended LOFT, and it was a transformative experience for him – we’re big believers in the idea that we grow most when we’re out of our comfort zones, and LOFT really supported his growth. Kim has loved serving in this important way, helping select the next LOFT attendees and ensuring that underprivileged kids in need are supported with aid through AG Bell. Caleb’s involvement with LOFT and Kim’s service on the review team recently came full circle when we received a note from a young man who attended LOFT and is now the program and development coordinator at AG Bell. Our decision to launch Turn It Up brought us to this moment, and it’s the source of so much pride for our family.”
Why Does Early Identification Matter?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over five percent of the world’s population – or 430 million people – require rehabilitation to address their disabling hearing loss (including 34 million children). It is estimated that by 2050 over 700 million people – or 1 in every 10 people – will have disabling hearing loss. Early identification of hearing loss and ear diseases is key to effective management. This requires systematic screening to detect hearing loss and related ear diseases in those most at risk. This includes:
- newborn babies and infants
- pre-school and school-age children
- people exposed to noise or chemicals at work
- people receiving ototoxic medicines
- older adults.
CME conferences can make a difference. During early childhood, listening and spoken language professionals guide families on making spoken language fully and naturally accessible to their children. Bring awareness to your community by signing up for any of our CME conferences today!
